Presentation Title: Category 1 Hydraulic Elevator Tests: Safe, Compliant, and Defensible Testing from the Mechanic’s Perspective
Description: Category 1 hydraulic elevator testing is more than completing a periodic inspection requirement, it is one of the most important responsibilities performed by a licensed elevator mechanic. Every test requires technical knowledge, sound judgment, and a commitment to protecting the mechanic, coworkers, building occupants, and the riding public. This course approaches Category 1 testing from the mechanic’s perspective, walking participants through the testing process from preparation to final documentation. Rather than simply reviewing code requirements, the presentation focuses on the practical decisions mechanics make before, during, and after testing, including understanding jurisdictional requirements, performing tests safely, recognizing conditions that require corrective action, and knowing when an elevator should remain out of service until repairs have been completed. Participants will gain practical guidance on performing Category 1 hydraulic tests safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes while understanding how proper documentation protects both the licensed mechanic and the company performing the work.

Bios:
Josh Josoff, QEI, STSC, is the Director of Codes and Standards for the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC), where he represents the union in the development, interpretation, and adoption of elevator safety codes and standards throughout North America. He works closely with regulators, code officials, manufacturers, contractors, inspectors, and labor representatives to improve elevator safety through the development and adoption of consensus standards. He serves on the IUEC Safety Committee, helping promote and establish safe working practices for the IUEC membership. Mr. Josoff has over 28 years of experience in the elevator industry, including 19 years as a Licensed Journeyman Elevator Constructor working in construction, modernization, repair, maintenance, and service. He is a member of the Nebraska Conveyance Safety Board and serves on several ASME A17 Code committees, as well as the ANSI/ASSP A10 Construction and Demolition Standards Committee. Mr. Josoff is dedicated to advancing elevator safety by bringing practical field experience to the development of codes and standards that improve safety for both workers and the riding public.
David Griefenhagen, QEI, STSC, has worked in the elevator industry for 22 years and is a proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors from Local 9 Minneapolis, MN. David has worked in the field for both major manufacturers and independent elevator companies. He has served as the Business Manager in Local 9, as a Vice President and Director of Codes and Standards for the IUEC. David is currently the Assistant Director of Safety for the IUEC. David’s participation in code development includes several ASME A17/B44 technical committees as well as a being a member on the US TAG to ISO/TC178 committee. Additionally, he is a member of multiple working committees within the ASSP A10 standards and is an active participant on the OSHA Elevator Industry Safety Partners Alliance.
